If you get bailiffs about an unexplained traffic debt, then you may have recently moved or bought a car, and the bailiff traced the new keeper address then ambushed you without giving the required Notice of Enforcement. Since 1 May 2026, a Notice of Enforcement must usually give at least 14 clear days before an enforcement agent can move to the enforcement stage. In some cases, a debt advice provider can request an extension so that the compliance period runs to at least 28 clear days.

From 1 May 2026, the fixed fees for non-High Court enforcement are £79 at compliance stage, £247 at enforcement stage and £116 at sale or disposal stage. The additional percentage fee remains 7.5% on the amount above £1,900 where the regulations permit it.
