How our public information is prepared
The public legal library is designed to make legal issues easier to understand and to point readers towards the documents, deadlines and official sources that matter.
Unless a page expressly says otherwise, the legal information is written for England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate legal systems in many areas. Pages that primarily concern another UK jurisdiction are marked accordingly and are not treated as core England and Wales guidance.
Where practical, pages link to legislation, GOV.UK, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, HMRC, regulators or other official material. Those sources should be checked against the live facts and current date before action is taken.
Pages start with the practical legal point, then identify the facts, evidence and procedure that usually change the outcome. The aim is to help readers distinguish the governing issue from background detail.
Court, tribunal, tax, enforcement and appeal deadlines can determine what remedies remain available. Our pages flag the need to identify the relevant deadline early rather than treating procedure as an afterthought.
Public pages do not decide the merits of a live case. A real matter can turn on documents, evidence, procedural history and facts that are not present in a general guide. Case-specific work is separately scoped.
